Catching Up

Just back from a week up an Alp, happily disconnected from the outside world. (Lots of mountain goats, but no marmots, alas.) Did I miss anything? I learned from French motorway service stations on the way home that England lost a Test Match and the Labour Party lost a by-election, both in rather embarrassing fashion. Anything else?

  1. Er…people started talking up seriously things like Alan Milburn being back in the cabinet and Jack Straw becoming PM (not necessarily together). Carol Vorderman got sacked from Countdown. Nick Cohen wrote a column in praise of Anthony Browne. D2 got married. We had a few ‘phew what a scorchers’, but they weren’t that hot. That’s about it really.

  2. Yes! And I saw the Tour on the open road for the first time!! (Previously I’d only seen it on the Champs-Elysées or at the London prologue — and I missed the ceremonial departure from Trafalgar Square last year by two minutes!).

Jo and I went down through Savoy to watch them go past at Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne en route for Alpe d’Huez, so a couple of hours before Sastre’s decisive attack. Which, naturally, I didn’t find out about until the following day…

The Tour was just about the only bit of outside world I did stay in touch with — various copies of L’Equipe ended up in my possession after being ferried up said Alp. I thought it was a smashing Tour.
