  1. There’s a good story from 1945 that illustrates Dalton’s overbearing nature. One of his permanent officials was on the porcelain one morning, taking a break from Dalton, when his colleague came in, knocked on the cubicle door and said “Dalton wants to speak to you”. “Tell him”, said the harrassed civil servant, “Tell him I can only deal with one shit at a time”.

Equally, this was the man who presented the 1946 budget to the Commons, after a speech attacking the evils of private enterprise, with the line “I have told my colleagues that I will find, and find with a song in my heart, whatever money is necessary.” He may have been a shit, but his heart was very definitely in the right place.
