Champs-Élysées

I don’t think I’ll try to become a professional sports photographer any time soon. But here are three images from this afternoon’s racing, anyway.

Quite by chance I seem to have got Alberto Contador in the middle of this pic, on the second half of the first circuit of the Champs-Élysées, flanked by the rest of his Discovery Channel team.

Here comes the peloton!

The Lampre riders, on their way to set up the stage win for Daniele Bennati.

  1. When I was watching on telly, I wondered - what if there was a breakaway early on and the leading group got to the Champs-Élysées early enough to be a lap ahead of the other riders? It strikes me as harder to manage than a similar occurrence in athletics (where they move more slowly) or motor racing (where when the leader has finished, everybody else finishes too rather than do extra laps).

  2. There seems to be a convention whereby the maillot jaune’s team leads out on the first circuit of the Champs-Élyseés, and then the racing starts properly after that, so it’s an unlikely eventuality. But, yes, in theory, there could be mayhem.

  3. Mind you they do have those cycle races indoors, don’t they, where everybody seems to be on a different lap?

  4. Yes, but I don’t care about those.
