Question

So if Jack Straw is the new Minister for Justice, do we have a new Lord Chancellor or not? Is it still Charlie Falconer? Do we have one at all? Presumably we do, because otherwise Brown would be in the same mess Blair was in when he tried to abolish the post. Or has something changed? Anyway: what’s going on?

    Ah, tehgraun says that “Straw will be lord chancellor too, though not in the Lords”. Is that possible? Maybe it is.

    I presume that this has only been made possible because of the transfer of the powers relating to the House of Lords to the position of Lord Speaker. If there aren’t any procedural duties in the Upper House, I guess anyone could be given the position.

    Why don’t we just have a new talent-reality show, presented by Ant & Dec; Lord Idol? The homonym could then underline all real importance being removed from the role.
