I want the pen to be on a par
with the bayonet; And Stalin
to deliver his Politburo
reports
about verse in the making
as he would about pig iron and the smelting of steel.

  1. Sadly, he got what he wanted, with excellent consequences for bayonets, but worse for verse. And, for that matter, steel production.

  2. Unfortunatley he committed suicide due to Stalinist repression, the poem chosen is certainly not his best find Talking to the Taxman about Poetry, yes Billy Bragg pinched it for one his album titles.
